A "happy accident" inspires the launch of Batch 37, Australia's freshest liquorice

A ‘happy accident’ inspires the launch of

Batch 37, Australia’s freshest liquorice

Some say it was a moment of genius, others refer to it as a ‘happy accident’, but whatever the tale, the re-birth of iconic confectionery brand Darrell Lea’s soft-eating liquorice is the stuff of legends.

Darrell Lea’s new Batch 37* liquorice – so named because of its concise 37-day shelf life, making it the freshest liquorice on the market – is now available in Darrell Lea stores and distributors nationwide, offering a melt-in-the-mouth experience that is second to none.

Formerly known as Original Soft Eating Liquorice, Batch 37 was born by accident one night back in 1957 at the Darrell Lea factory. The recipe was not followed as it should and resulted in the softest liquorice the Lea family had ever produced.

Darrell Lea CEO, Stuart Smith, said the exact story of Batch 37 remains as enigma but the finished product is the benchmark for liquorice around the world.

“No one knows precisely what happened that night, but one thing is certain – Batch 37 is the freshest, most authentic, and best tasting liquorice on the market. Based on an original Lea family recipe, it’s something Darrell Lea has perfected over the years and it’s little wonder its popularity has spread beyond Australia to the USA, UK, Canada, South Africa and New Zealand,” Mr Smith said.

Masterchef finalist Justine Schofield has created a selection of Liquorice-inspired recipes to tantalise tastebuds and introduce Batch 37, complete with its new retro-style packaging, to sweet tooths across Australia.

“Batch 37 is set to reignite the love affair many Australians have with liquorice – you’d be surprised at the extraordinary lengths some go to in order to get their fix!” Justine said. “I’d love people to also experience the joys of cooking with liquorice – it has such a distinctive and delicious flavour and texture and is a surprising, yet delightful addition to a whole range of dishes,” she added.

Darrell Lea Batch 37 Liquorice is available in 300g and 500g varieties, for an RRP of $3.89 and $5.89 respectively. For more information about Batch 37 or for store locations visit www.dlea.com.au

*Batch 37 was formally known as Original Soft Eating Liquorice and is currently being relaunched, complete with its new name and packaging, across Australia.

Embargoed until 9am 2 September 2011, Sydney, Australia: Ever imagined what it would be like to take home one of your favourite celebs? This Father's Day, Darrell Lea is giving Aussies the opportunity to do just that while raising money for the Save the Bilby Fund.

Much loved comedian and 7PM Project presenter, Dave Hughes; TODAY Show host, Karl Stefanovic; and celebrated food critic, MasterChef judge Matt Preston have been immortalised in one-of-a-kind, life-size Darrell Lea chocolate head sculptures. World-champion sculptor, Kenji Ogawa, crafted each head in just two days from 60kg blocks of Darrell Lea chocolate specially created by Darrell Lea's Master Confectioner – Mark Tubman.

Kenji Ogawa, an internationally acclaimed sculptor, whose previous projects include a 10 tonne ice polar bear, said: "Lifelike faces are challenging to sculpt, particularly when it comes to accurately capturing the unique features of an individual. But, it is also highly rewarding and I loved the experience of working with chocolate to create these very unique pieces of art. I did however, have to stop myself from eating the shavings!"

Kenji and Darrell Lea have combined their artisan approaches to craft the heads to raise money for the Save the Bilby Fund. The bilby is one of Australia's most endangered species, with only 600 left in the wild. The chocolate sculptures will be awarded to the highest bidders in an eBay charity auction, with all proceeds going to the Save the Bilby Fund in support of Save the Bilby Day, 11 September 2011.

Scott Rylands from Darrell Lea said, "We've been supporting the Save the Bilby Fund since its inception with sales of chocolate bilbies, which are a very popular treat in store and have raised more than $400,000. This year we wanted to create a stir and raise awareness of this worthwhile cause that is very near and dear to our hearts."

About Save the Bilby Fund
Save the Bilby Fund was set up by conservationists Frank Manthey and Peter McRae in 1999 to raise money to help put a stop to the steady decline of Australia's bilbies.

Bilbies, or rabbit-eared bandicoots, were common in many different habitats throughout Australia until European settlement. Hunting by dingoes, foxes and feral cats has meant that bilby populations now only occur in the isolated arid and semi-arid areas of Western Australia, Northern Territory and Queensland. It is estimated that there are currently only 600 remaining in the wild.

Save the Bilby Fund supports the three main aims of the National Recovery Plan for bilbies:
• to support research into the biology and ecology of the species to identify the reasons for population and distribution decline
• to direct management efforts towards addressing threatening processes
• to re-establish populations, based on the biological knowledge gained through the research.

Australians Shatter and Bite This Easter

Culinary Egg-sperts Justine Schofield and Darrell Lea uncover a nation of destructive Easter egg lovers!

30 March 2010, Australia – When it comes to enjoying Easter eggs, Australians have revealed themselves as a nation of impatient ‘Shatterers’, ‘Biters’ and ‘Imploders’ rather than sensual ‘Melters’ or ‘Stashers’– suggesting we’re rushing to enjoy this iconic Easter treat!

These are the results of the Easter Eggspert Survey from Darrell Lea – which investigates the idiosyncratic habits of 1200 Australian across the country. Respondents were asked to define themselves under the following headlines (statistics included for each):

·THE SHATTERER (28% of Australians): crushes the Easter egg into small pieces before eating. PERSONALITY INSIGHT: A drama lover. Every activity in their life is an event. Heated and tempestuous.

·THE BITER (22% of Australians): The biter doesn't muck about. Once opened, the top bitten off first. PERSONALITY INSIGHT The risk-taker. Challenging and exciting to know. Generally a visionary and a leader.

·THE IMPLODER (19% of Australians): Breaks the egg with simple precision, by applying pressure inwards and forcing the pieces inside. PERSONALITY INSIGHT: High attention to detail. Neat and straightforward, conservative with a twist.

·THE MELTER (9% of Australians): Slowly dissolves each of the pieces on the tongue. PERSONALITY INSIGHT: The sensualist. Likely to work in arts and entertainment. Knows good quality when they see or taste it.

·THE STASHER (7% of Australians): Goes to a lot of trouble to hide their egg collection. Eats it on their own. PERSONALITY INSIGHT: The loner. Enjoys their own company, and has a lot of singular hobbies. Is sometimes a perfectionist.

Culinary Masterchef Star and self-confessed Chocolate lover Justine Schofield partnered with Darrell Lea to investigate the matter, and says the results are an interesting insight into our Easter egg-sperience.

“The Easter Eggspert Survey from Darrell Lea shows that when it comes to our Easter eggs – we really grab the bull by the horns! Australians love their chocolate and Easter is the perfect time to enjoy it, but be careful about the way you eat it – because it really does reveal an insight into who you are!”

Whether you’re a shatterer, a biter, an imploder, a stasher or a melter – there’s something at Darrell Lea for you this Easter. Hop into store to choose from an iconic range of products such as the Famous Soft Nougat Egg (now available in decadent dark chocolate), Half Eggs filled with Rocklea Road® or Liquorice, Hand Rolled Eggs covered in Hundreds and Thousands or Almonds, Chocolate Bilbies and much more!

Darrell Lea continues their support of the Save The Bilby Fund this Easter

March 2010, Australia - Darrell Lea chocolates are always a family favourite and to sweeten the deal, this Easter you can help save the Bilby, one of Australia’s endangered species, simply by enjoying a sweet treat!

<img src="http://www.dlea.com.au/media/content_pages/Bilbys_apart.jpg" style="margin: 0 10px 0 0; width: 350px; height: 355px "alt="Save the Bilby Fund" align="left"/>

As the only official confectionery sponsor of the Save the Bilby Fund, Darrell Lea will again sell their famous chocolate Bilbies as part of their Easter range.

Darrell Lea has been supporting the Save the Bilby Fund since its inception in 1999 and has raised in excess of $319,000 to date through the sale of the chocolate Bilbies.

The total sales of Bilbies leapt in 2009 by 30%, suggesting that as a nation we are taking a greater interest in promoting the native Bilby and are enjoying their presence during our Easter festivities.

The long-term commitment of Darrell Lea to the plight of the Bilbies has seen significant advances in research and protection. With a portion of the donation, Darrell Lea has helped the Save The Bilby Fund raise enough money to build and maintain a 25 square kilometer predator-proof fenced off area, used as a safe Bilby haven in the Currawinya National Park in Queensland.

This year the campaign has been taken to a whole new level with the Zoo and Aquarium Association producing a promotional community service announcement highlighting the Bilby’s plight – and encouraging consumers to purchase their chocolate Bilbies from Darrell Lea. Martin Phillips, Executive Director of the Zoo and Aquarium Association believes that without the ongoing support of Darrell Lea through their Easter promotion, the situation faced by the Bilby would be more dire.

The donations made by Darrell Lea over the last decade have been a tremendous help in the fight against the Biliby’s extinction. We have added to their efforts this year with the production of our CSA. Together with their financial support and our ongoing commitment to raising awareness, we will work hard to provide safe environments and habitats for Bilbies across Australia,” he finished.

This year the focus will be on the always-popular 160g Bilby available in milk, white and dark chocolate, where 50 cents from the sale price will go directly to the Save the Bilby Fund.

However, there are 5 different varieties of Darrell Lea Bilbies to choose from with each sale resulting in the following donation to the Save the Bilby Fund:

·	Milk Chocolate Bilby 160g $8.99 (50 cents donated from sale)

·	White Chocolate Bilby 160g $8.99 (50 cents donated from sale)

·	Dark Chocolate Bilby 160g $8.99 (50 cents donated from sale)

·	Milk Chocolate Bilby 90g $5.99 (30 cents donated from sale)

·	Sugar Free Bilby 90g $7.99 (30 cents donated from sale)

So what better excuse to buy a Darrell Lea chocolate Bilby than to help save this endearing yet highly endangered species!

Bilbies will be available from Darrell Lea stores and stockists nationally from late February, only while stocks last.

ABOUT THE BILBY

Bilbies are desert dwelling marsupials with large ears, light grey and tan fur and a very distinctive black and white tail. Of the six bandicoot species that once lived in the arid/semi-arid areas of Australia, bilbies are the only species remaining.
Once, the Bilby could be found across large areas of eastern Australia west of the Great Dividing Range but have now disappeared from New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia with populations only occurring sporadically in the isolated arid and semi-arid areas of Western Australia, Northern Territory and Queensland. It is estimated that there are currently only 600 remaining in the wild.

ABOUT THE SAVE THE BILBY FUND

The Save the Bilby Fund was set up by Ranger Frank Manthey and Zoologist Peter McRae from the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, to raise enough money to build and maintain a 25 square kilometre predator-proof fenced-off area as a safe Bilby haven in the Currawinya National Park, in Central West Queensland.

The work of the Save the Bilby Fund is crucial to the survival of the Bilby because it is able to:

·	research the Bilby and find out why its numbers are declining and why they are no longer found in some areas of Australia;.

·	make Australians aware of practices that might damage Bilby habitat to therefore increase the Bilby’s chance of survival; and.

·	run an effective captive and wild breeding program to reintroduce Bilbies to the wild.

Refunds, Re-Gifting and Relatives!

REFUNDS, RE-GIFTING AND RELATIVES!

Aussie funny woman Denise Drysdale joins forces with Darrell Lea to help
Australians navigate this year’s gift-giving minefield…

23 October 2009, Australia – Australians are full of Christmas cheer and festive fun, but there are
a few taboo topics surrounding ‘good gift giving’ behaviour which should be addressed for the
record. Whilst we all know it is the thought that counts, some gift givers don't play fair so it’s time
to turn the tables.

Whether it’s your spoilt sister-in-law, ungrateful uncle or a greedy granny, we should all be armed
with strategies this season, as you never know when well-meant gift-giving could end in a cold
silence.

One of Australia’s most-loved entertainers, Denise Drysdale has jumped in the sleigh with Darrell
Lea this year, tapping into decades of family gifting experience to bring you a cringe-free
Christmas!

1. Showing gratitude under EXTREME circumstances

It’s present time and the relatives are relaxing and sipping sherry. It’s your turn to open that
special box and when you do, you are unable to stifle the cry of disappointment that this garish gift
is not even close to what you want, despite months of not-so-subtle hint dropping!

Denise’s tips:

• Spend time in front of the mirror or pet practicing beaming smiles, looks of pure wonderment
and overly enthusiastic messages of thanks. These will come in very handy to hide your
disappointment when you open the offending item.

• Tell them that you’re speechless and start crying – they will never know you mean it in a bad
way. Take it one step further and appoint a spokesperson on your behalf to do the thanking for
you.

• Have handy, and ideally consume 30 minutes prior to present time, a bottle of bubbly that will
assist you in relaying that the gift is pure genius.

• If the same perpetrator repeatedly persists with the unwanted gifts you’ll have no choice but to
fight back by seeing etiquette point #2.

2. The Mantras on re-gifting

You’ve received the same vase twice and you hate that pharmacy perfume. You have a sneaking
suspicion these look strangely like gifts from three years ago, so it’s time to even the score and
perpetuate the items’ re-gifting voyage!

Denise’s tips:

• Re-gifts should be wrapped in lavish paper with fluorescent ribbon for extra flair..

• Be mindful of tense pitfalls, such as accidently giving someone something they gave you.
Establish a dedicated re-gifting cupboard at home and keep a strict inventory using a logbook
and citing date received, recipient and occasion..

• Ultimately the best way to ensure nothing YOU ever give is re-gifted is to give them something
from Darrell Lea. They won’t last through the day, let alone until the next year, but that’s a
separate issue altogether. Speaking of which…

3. Shirking on sharing.

You’ve just been presented with a box of Darrell Lea festive chocolates. Twenty other family
members in the room look over expectantly. Once everyone has taken their pick, there’ll be none
left for you!.

Denise’s tips:

• Leverage this as an opportunity to compliment the host on the lovely spread of food that’s
available today. Suggest that everyone must be so full that they couldn’t POSSIBLY consume
chocolates and it’s best to save them for a later occasion. Then go home and scoff the lot.

• Alternatively, a large, loud and wet sneeze over the box should do the trick. Perhaps also
make quick reference to your recent bout of gastro.

• If you want to play it safe-as-houses, lock yourself in the host’s bathroom and consume them
all in one sitting. To avoid people suspecting your plot, remember to not dispose of the box in
the bin; just tuck it away in your bag.

4. Overly-generous guests.

Unexpectedly your neighbours pop round for Christmas cake on Boxing Day. They have huge
presents for you and all your family. Even the dog has a Chistmas bone! But alas, you have not
bought presents for them. How do you save face amongst friends?

Denise’s tips:

• Revert to re-gift cupboard!.

• Ply unexpected guests with alcohol until they’re unsure of their whereabouts and don’t know
whether they are coming or going. Perhaps not one for the children….

• Distract and mobilise. While enthusiastically welcoming your guests in, you send your partner
to ‘pick up some nibbles’ (read: ‘buy emergency gifts for all in attendance’)..

• Stock up on enough Darrell Lea treats to be sure you’ll have something for everyone who
pops in!.

5. The snooty gift snob

Your filthy rich sister-in-law has everything she could ever want and more. Every year she is
increasingly difficult to buy for and every year she turns her nose up at your gift. How do you
politely put her in her place?

Denise’s tips:

• Buy yourself a luxury designer item – something you’ve been coveting for some time – and
hold onto the box and bag. Then proceed to purchase a small inferior product, remove its
tags, repackage in the designer dressings and hand over with a great big smile on your face.
Have camera handy for the ensuing fireworks.

• Volunteer her to a local charity for 20 hours of community service that will surely get her in
the spirit of giving back.

• For moderate offence, purchase a T-Shirt three sizes too big for her and shriek out aloud
that you’ve kept the receipt in case it’s too tight.

• Remember you can’t go wrong with food. No one will mind an over supply of sweet treats,
even the snobs!

To avoid the pitfalls of present etiquette, make sure Darrell Lea chocolates are top of your
shopping list this Christmas. Their extensive range of unique Christmas gifts will be available in
store from November.
