Darrell Lea eyes sweet world record for Australia Day

Australians always knew their country was pretty sweet, but this Australia Day they will have proof as Darrell Lea plans to set a new Guinness World Record for the World’s Largest Piece of Rocklea Road.

On Friday 25th January, the World’s Largest Piece of Rocklea Road will be made from scratch by five chocolatiers at Darrell Lea’s Sydney factory to a special recipe to celebrate the occasion.

The record-breaking attempt is expected to use more than 85kg of milk chocolate, 80kg of “green and gold” marshmallows, 20kg of nuts (peanuts, macadamias and walnuts) and 8kg of cranberries.

Expected to measure 5.5m long by 2m wide, the 11 square metre slab of rocky road will weigh more than 200kg.

Commercial Marketing Manager Nicole Waters said Darrell Lea was inspired to strive for the Guinness World Record attempt following Australians’ overwhelming show of support last year when the brand almost disappeared for good.

“Australia Day is the nation’s big day and as an Australian-owned company making Australian-made confectionery, we want to do something special and at the same time relaunch Darrell Lea,” she said.

“Twenty kilograms is the current record for the World’s Largest Piece of Rocky Road so our attempt will shatter this by a mile.

“Building the giant slab of rocky road will be a spectacle and we’ve already begun practicing to make sure our attempt is successful. We’ve plenty of experience in creating bite-sized bars of Rocklea Road – but making something of this size is something else!”

Founded in 1927, Darrell Lea is Australia’s largest liquorice producer and makes all of its chocolate in its Sydney factory. Its famous products include Rocklea Road and soft eating liquorice.
